The Day of the Lord

The day of the Lord, Jesus is coming in the clouds with His armies

As I (Daniel) watched, this horn was waging war against the saints and prevailing against them, until the Ancient of Days arrived and pronounced judgment in favor of the saints of the Most High, and the time came for them to possess the kingdom.

Daniel 7:21-22

What is the day of the Lord?

In the Old Testament the Day of the Lord is also called "The Day of Yahweh" or "That Day". It is a prominent theme in the writings of the Old Testament prophets. Amos, Joel, Zephaniah, and Isaiah all speak of this day as a time of reckoning, when God will intervene in human affairs to establish justice and righteousness. For example, in the book of Joel, it is described as a day of darkness and gloom, but also a day of salvation for those who call upon the name of the Lord (Joel 2:31-32).

In the New Testament the phraise "The Day of the Lord" is used in several books and in 2 Thessalonians
in just one sentence Paul identifies for us the Day of the Lord as the Second Coming of Jesus:

2 Thessalonians 2:1-2
"Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to Him, we ask you, brothers, not to be easily disconcerted or alarmed by any spirit or message or letter seeming to be from us, alleging that the Day of the Lord has already come."

When is the day of the Lord?

Mark 13:32-33 (Matthew 24:36–51Luke 12:35–48)

32 No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on your guard and stay alert!g For you do not know when the appointed time will come.

In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, it is stated that the precise day or hour of Jesus' return is known only to the Heavenly Father. However, clues are provided regarding the general season and timing through the sequence of events of the end times.

The Day of the Lord on the Biblical Calendar

The Day of the Lord on the Biblical Calendar

The prophetic significance of God's feasts in the biblical calendar can help us understand the timing of the Day of the Lord. While the spring feasts of PassoverUnleavened BreadFirstfruits, and Weeks are connected to Christ's first coming, signifying His death, resurrection, and establishment of His church, the fall set of feasts including TrumpetsDay of Atonement, and Tabernacles point to His second coming, the judgment of humanity, and finally, God's eternal dwelling with men.

The Day of the Lord according to the prophecies in Matthew 24:31, 1 Corinthians 15:51-54 and 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17  falls on the Feast of Trumpets during the fall feast season.

  • Passover-Crucifixion-Sin Offering

  • Unleavened Bread-Redemption-Freedom from Sin

  • First Fruits-Resurrection-Spiritual Birth

  • Feast of Weeks-Outpouring of the Holy Spirit

  • Feast of Trumpets-The Day of the Lord

  • Day of Atonement-The Judgement Day

  • Tabernacles-Heavenly Jerusalem on New Earth

The Day of the Lord in the book of Daniel

The Day of the Lord in the book of Daniel

In addition to the clue provided in the Feast of Trumpets, the book of Daniel offers a prophecy that directly relates to the Day of the Lord, providing us with a specific day count that aligns with the timeline we're examining. The beginning of the Great Tribulation, indicated by the setting up of the abomination of desolation, initiates a period lasting three and a half years or 1260 days. Following this, there remain two distinct time periods: 30 days and 45 days leading up to the Day of the Lord.

Prior to the return of Christ, two sets of events unfold: the occurrence of the last five plagues and the events of the Battle of Armageddon. It stands to reason that these events correspond to these time periods, suggesting a 30-day duration for the plagues and a 45-day timeframe for the gathering of the nations to the Battle of Armageddon."

Daniel 12:10-12

10 Many will be purified, made spotless, and refined, but the wicked will continue to act wickedly. None of the wicked will understand, but the wise will understand. 11 And from the time the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation set up, there will be 1,290 days12 Blessed is he who waits and reaches the end of the 1,335 days

The Day of the Lord in the Old Testament

Isaiah 2:10-19

  • comes with terror

  • proud will be humbled

  • Yahweh will be exalted

  • idols will vanish

  • men will flee to caves

10 Go into the rocks and hide in the dust from the terror of Yahweh and the splendor of His majesty. 11 The proud look of man will be humbled, and the loftiness of men brought low; Yahweh alone will be exalted in that day. 12 For the Day of the Lord (Yahweh) of Hosts will come against all the proud and lofty, against all that is exalted—it will be humbled—13 against all the cedars of Lebanon, lofty and lifted up, against all the oaks of Bashan, 14 against all the tall mountains, against all the high hills, 15 against every high tower, against every fortified wall, 16 against every ship of Tarshish, and against every stately vessel. 17 So the pride of man will be brought low, and the loftiness of men will be humbled; Yahweh alone will be exalted in that day, 18 and the idols will vanish completely. 19 Men will flee to caves in the rocks and holes in the ground, away from the terror of Yahweh and from the splendor of His majesty, when He rises to shake the earth.

Isaiah 11:10-12

  • Jesus will stand as a banner for the nations

  • the Lord will recover the remnant of His people from all he earth

10 On that day the Root of Jesse (Revelation 5:5) will stand as a banner for the peoples. The nations will seek Him, and His place of rest will be glorious. 11 On that day the Lord will extend His hand a second time to recover the remnant of His people from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. 12 He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; He will collect the scattered of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

Isaiah 11:15-16

  • Yahweh will make a highway for His remnant to return from Assyria

15 Yahweh will devote to destruction the gulf of the Sea of Egypt; with a scorching wind He will sweep His hand over the Euphrates. He will split it into seven streams for men to cross with dry sandals. 16 There will be a highway for the remnant of His people who remain from Assyria, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.

Isaiah 13:1-13

  • Yahweh will call His sanctified warriors from the ends of the heavens to execute His wrath and exalt Him

  • nations will be gathered together

  • terror, pain and anguish will cease all

  • sun, moon and stars will be darkened

  • proud will be humbled

  • sinners will be destroyed

1 This is the burden against Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz received: 2 Raise a banner on a barren hilltop; call aloud to them. Wave your hand, that they may enter the gates of the nobles 3 I have commanded My sanctified ones; I have even summoned My warriors to execute My wrath and exult in My triumph. 4 Listen, a tumult on the mountains, like that of a great multitude! Listen, an uproar among the kingdoms, like nations gathered together! Yahweh of Hosts is mobilizing an army for war. 5 They are coming from faraway lands, from the ends of the heavens—Yahweh and the weapons of His wrath—to destroy the whole country. 6 Wail, for the Day of Yahweh is near; it will come as destruction from the Almighty. 7 Therefore all hands will fall limp, and every man’s heart will melt. 8 Terror, pain, and anguish will seize them; they will writhe like a woman in labor. They will look at one another, their faces flushed with fear. 9 Behold, the Day of the Lord (Yahweh) is coming—cruel, with fury and burning anger—to make the earth a desolation and to destroy the sinners within it. 10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations will not give their light. The rising sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light. 11 I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their iniquity. I will end the haughtiness of the arrogant and lay low the pride of the ruthless. 12 I will make man scarcer than pure gold, and mankind rarer than the gold of Ophir. 13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken from its place at the wrath of Yahweh of Hosts on the day of His burning anger.

Isaiah 27:12-13

  • great ram’s horn will sound

  • Yahweh will gather Israel one by one from Assyria and Egypt

  • they will worship Yahweh on the holy mountain in Jerusalem

12 In that day Yahweh will thresh from the flowing Euphrates to the Wadi of Egypt, and you, O Israelites, will be gathered one by one. 13 And in that day a great ram’s horn will sound, and those who were perishing in Assyria will come forth with those who were exiles in Egypt. And they will worship Yahweh on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.

Isaiah 34:1-4

  • Yahweh is angry with all the nations and their armies

  • they will be slaughtered and left unburied

  • mountains will flow with their blood

  • skies will be rolled up like a scroll

  • stars will fall

1 Come near, O nations, to listen; pay attention, O peoples. Let the earth hear, and all that fills it, the world and all that springs from it. 2 Yahweh is angry with all the nations and furious with all their armies. He will devote them to destruction; He will give them over to slaughter. 3 Their slain will be left unburied, and the stench of their corpses will rise; the mountains will flow with their blood. 4 All the stars of heaven will be dissolved (decay). The skies will be rolled up like a scroll, and all their stars will fall like withered leaves from the vine, like foliage from the fig tree.

Jeremiah 25:30-33

  • Yahweh will roar loudly from on high over His pasture (Israel) against all the inhabitants of the earth

  • Yahweh will bring judgement on all mankind

  • slain will be spread all over the earth and will not be buried

30 So you are to prophesy all these words against them and say to them: ‘Yahweh will roar from on high; He will raise His voice from His holy habitation. He will roar loudly over His pasture; like those who tread the grapes, He will call out with a shout against all the inhabitants of the earth. 31 The tumult will resound to the ends of the earth because Yahweh brings a charge against the nations. He brings judgment on all mankind and puts the wicked to the sword,’ declares Yahweh. 32 This is what Yahweh of Hosts says: “Behold! Disaster is spreading from nation to nation; a mighty storm is rising from the ends of the earth.” 33 Those slain by Yahweh on that day will be spread from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned, gathered, or buried. They will be like dung lying on the ground.

Joel 1:15-20

  • food will be cut off

  • drought and fire

15 Alas for the day! For the Day of the Lord (Yahweh) is near, and it will come as destruction from the Almighty. 16 Has not the food been cut off before our very eyes—joy and gladness from the house of our God? 17 The seeds lie shriveled beneath the clods; the storehouses are in ruins; the granaries are broken down, for the grain has withered away. 18 How the cattle groan! The herds wander in confusion because they have no pasture. Even the flocks of sheep are suffering. 19 To You, O Yahweh, I call, for fire has consumed the open pastures and flames have scorched all the trees of the field. 20 Even the beasts of the field pant for You, for the streams of water have dried up, and fire has consumed the open pastures.

Joel 2:1-11

  • blow ram’s horn (trumpet)

  • darkness

  • great army will appear like horses

  • nations will be in horror

  • sun, moon and stars will grow dark

  • Yahweh will raise His voice in the presence of His army

1 Blow the ram’s horn in Zion; sound the alarm on My holy mountain! Let all who dwell in the land tremble, for the Day of the Lord (Yahweh) is coming; indeed, it is near—2 a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness. Like the dawn overspreading the mountains a great and strong army appears, such as never was of old, nor will ever be in ages to come. 3 Before them a fire devours, and behind them a flame scorches. The land before them is like the Garden of Eden, but behind them, it is like a desert wasteland—surely nothing will escape them. 4 Their appearance is like that of horses, and they gallop like swift steeds. 5 With a sound like that of chariots they bound over the mountaintops, like the crackling of fire consuming stubble, like a mighty army deployed for battle. 6 Nations writhe in horror before them; every face turns pale. 7 They charge like mighty men; they scale the walls like men of war. Each one marches in formation, not swerving from the course. 8 They do not jostle one another; each proceeds in his path. They burst through the defenses, never breaking ranks. 9 They storm the city; they run along the wall; they climb into houses, entering through windows like thieves. 10 Before them the earth quakes; the heavens tremble. The sun and moon grow dark, and the stars loose their brightness. 11 The LORD raises His voice in the presence of His army. Indeed, His camp is very large, for mighty are those who obey His command. For the Day of Yahweh is great and very dreadful. Who can endure it?

Joel 2:28-32

  • Yahweh will pour out His Spirit on all people

  • there will be wonders in heavens and on earth

  • the sun and  the moon will turn dark

  • everyone who calls on the name of Yahweh will be saved

  • on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance

28 And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on My menservants and maidservants, I will pour out My Spirit in those days. 30 I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and awesome Day of the Lord (Yahweh). 32 And everyone who calls on the name of Yahweh will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as Yahweh has promised, among the remnant called by Yahweh.

Joel 3:9-16

  • call to nations to prepare for war

  • nations are called to the valley of Jehoshaphat to be Judged by Yahweh

  • call to harvest the grapes

  • multitude in the valley of decision

  • sun, moon and stars will grow dark

  • Yahweh will roar from Zion

  • Yahweh will be refuge for His people Israel

9 Proclaim this among the nations: “Prepare for war; rouse the mighty men; let all the men of war advance and attack! 10 Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weak say, ‘I am strong!’ 11 Come quickly, all you surrounding nations, and gather yourselves. Bring down Your mighty ones, O Yahweh. 12 Let the nations be roused and advance to the Valley of Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit down to judge all the nations on every side. 13 Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, trample the grapes, for the winepress is full; the wine vats overflow because their wickedness is great. 14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the Day of the Lord (Yahweh) is near in the valley of decision. 15 The sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will no longer shine. 16 Yahweh will roar from Zion and raise His voice from Jerusalem; heaven and earth will tremble. But Yahweh will be a refuge for His people, a stronghold for the people of Israel.

Amos 5:18-20

  • day of Yahweh will be darkness and gloom

18 Woe to you who long for the Day of Yahweh! What will the Day of the Lord (Yahweh) be for you? It will be darkness and not light. 19 It will be like a man who flees from a lion, only to encounter a bear, or who enters his house and rests his hand against the wall, only to be bitten by a snake. 20 Will not the Day of Yahweh be darkness and not light, even gloom with no brightness in it?

Obadiah 1:15-18

  • it will be done to nations as they have done

  • there will be deliverance on Mount Zion

  • the house of Jacob will reclaim their possession

  • the house of Esau will be set ablaze and consumed by the house of Jacob

15 For the Day of the Lord (Yahweh) is near for all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your recompense will return upon your own head. 16 For as you drank on My holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and gulp it down; they will be as if they had never existed. 17 But on Mount Zion there will be deliverance, and it will be holy, and the house of Jacob will reclaim their possession. 18 Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire, and the house of Joseph a burning flame; but the house of Esau will be stubble—Jacob will set it ablaze and consume it. Therefore no survivor will remain from the house of Esau.”

The Day of the Lord in the New Testament

1 Thessalonians 5:1-3

  • the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night

  • while people are saying “Peace and security” sudden destruction will come

1 Now about the times and seasons, brothers, we do not need to write to you. 2 For you are fully aware that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “Peace and security,” destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

2 Thessalonians 2:1-12

  • rebellion and the man of lawlessness have to come before the Day of the Lord

  • son of destruction will exalt himself above all and will sit in the temple of God proclaiming himself to be God

  • the mystery of lawlessness is at work but is restrained until the lawless one is revealed

  • coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by every kind of power, sign, and false wonder

  • Jesus will destroy him by His coming

1 Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to Him, we ask you, brothers, 2 not to be easily disconcerted or alarmed by any spirit or message or letter seeming to be from us, alleging that the Day of the Lord has already come. 3 Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness—the son of destruction—is revealed. 4 He will oppose and exalt himself above every so-called god or object of worship. So he will seat himself in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. 5 Do you not remember that I told you these things while I was still with you? 6 And you know what is now restraining him, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one who now restrains it will continue until he is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will slay with the breath of His mouth and annihilate by the majesty of His arrival. 9 The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the working of Satan, with every kind of power, sign, and false wonder, 10 and with every wicked deception directed against those who are perishing, because they refused the love of the truth that would have saved them. 11 For this reason God will send them a powerful delusion so that they believe the lie, 12 in order that judgment may come upon all who have disbelieved the truth and delighted in wickedness.

Revelation 16:12-16

  • after the 6th bowl is poured out the water of Euphrates will be dried up to prepare the way for the kings of the East

  • 3 unclean spirits will come out of the mouths of the dragon, the beast and the false prophet

  • the spirits will perform signs and will assemble the kings of the earth for the day of the Lord at Armageddon

12 And the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings of the East. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits that looked like frogs coming out of the mouths of the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet. 14 These are demonic spirits that perform signs and go out to all the kings of the earth, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty15 “Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who remains awake and clothed, so that he will not go naked and let his shame be exposed.” 16 And they assembled the kings in the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.

Interpretations and Eschatological Views

Christian theologians have offered various interpretations of the Day of the Lord, leading to different eschatological perspectives. Some view it as a singular event marking the end of the present age, while others see it as a series of judgments and interventions unfolding over time. These differing views have given rise to beliefs such as premillennialism, postmillennialism, and amillennialism, each offering its own understanding of how the events of the end times will unfold.

In the end the Day of the Lord serves as a reminder of God's faithfulness to his promises and his ultimate victory over sin and death. As such, it calls believers to live with faith, hope, and love, as they eagerly await the coming of the Lord and the establishment of His Kingdom on earth.
