Sin

Adam and Eve expelled from the garden of Eden as consequence of sin

Sin is a very big topic in the Bible. Sin caused the fall of mankind and creation and led us into the chaos in which we live today. Sin condemns most people alive today to eternity in hell. In essence sin is anything you do, say or think that is contrary to God’s nature or character and therefore contrary to His will. In this study, we will go through all the Bible passages on sin to help us understand this topic in its entirety and to help us live a more sinless life that pleases God and reflects His character to others.

"Sin" in the Old Testament

What is sin and who is responsible?

In the Old Testament sin is described as the transgression of God's commandments, statutes, and ordinances, it enters through wrongful actions. As humans, we bear the responsibility to govern over sin, yet it ensnares us, leading to our downfall. Every sin, committed in the sight of God, is a betrayal against Him. It entangles us, guiding towards destruction, while our sins act as witnesses against us leading to spiritual and physical death.

  • Sin enters through doing wrong

  • We must rule over sin

  • Sin is the breaking of God's commandments, statues and ordinances

  • All sin is committed in God's sight and is against Him

  • Our sin entraps us and leads into destruction

  • Our sins testify against us

  • We know our sins

  • The soul who sins is the one who will die

Genesis 4:7

If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”

Nehemiah 1:6-7

I (Nehemiah) confess the sins that we Israelites have committed against You. Both I and my father’s house have sinned. We have behaved corruptly against You and have not kept the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that You gave Your servant Moses.

Psalm 51:3

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You may be proved right when You speak and blameless when You judge.

Proverbs 5:22-23

The iniquities of a wicked man entrap him; the cords of his sin entangle him. He shall die without instruction; and in the abundance of his foolishness he shall go astray.

Isaiah 59:11-13

We all growl like bears and moan like doves. We hope for justice, but find none, for salvation, but it is far from us. For our transgressions are multiplied before You, and our sins testify against us. Our transgressions are indeed with us, and we know our iniquities: rebelling and denying Yahweh, turning away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering lies from the heart.

Ezekiel 3:17-21

17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from My mouth, give them a warning from Me. 18 If I say to the wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’ but you do not warn him or speak out to warn him from his wicked way to save his life, that wicked man will die in his iniquity, and I will hold you responsible for his blood. 19 But if you warn a wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness and his wicked way, he will die in his iniquity, but you will have saved yourself. 20 Now if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I put a stumbling block before him, he will die. If you did not warn him, he will die in his sin, and the righteous acts he did will not be remembered. And I will hold you responsible for his blood. 21 But if you warn the righteous man not to sin, and he does not sin, he will indeed live because he heeded your warning, and you will have saved yourself.”

Ezekiel 18:20

The soul who sins is the one who will die. A son will not bear the iniquity of his father, and a father will not bear the iniquity of his son. The righteousness of the righteous man will fall upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked man will fall upon him.

Consequences of Sin

man-standing-on-dead-side-of-nature

From Destruction to Poverty sin's consequences are far-reaching and severe. It breeds destruction and rejection, and culminates in death. It enslaves the soul, robs of peace, and creates barriers between men and God.

  • Destruction

  • Rejection

  • Death

  • Being eaten by animals (Like Jezebel and victims of the battle of Armageddon)

  • Slavery

  • Lack of peace

  • Barrier between God and men

  • Poverty

Genesis 18:20

Then Yahweh said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great. Because their sin is so grievous...

Genesis 19:13

…because we are about to destroy this place (Sodom and Gomorrah) for the outcry to Yahweh against its people is so great that He has sent us to destroy it."

1 Samuel 15:22-23

But Samuel declared: “Does Yahweh delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obedience to His voice? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, and attentiveness is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance is like the wickedness of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of Yahweh, He has rejected you (Saul) as king.”

2 Samuel  12:13-14

Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against Yahweh.” “Yahweh has taken away your sin,” Nathan replied. “You will not die. Nevertheless, because by this deed you have shown utter contempt for the word of Yahweh, the son born to you will surely die.”

1 Kings 13:33-34

Even after these events, Jeroboam did not repent of his evil ways, but again he appointed priests for the high places from every class of people. He ordained anyone who desired to be a priest of the high places. And this was the sin of the house of Jeroboam that led to its extermination and destruction from the face of the earth.

1 Kings 16:1-4

Then the word of Yahweh came to Jehu son of Hanani against Baasha, saying: “Even though I lifted you out of the dust and made you ruler over My people Israel, you have walked in the way of Jeroboam and have caused My people Israel to sin and to provoke Me to anger by their sins. So now I will consume Baasha and his house, and I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat: Anyone belonging to Baasha who dies in the city will be eaten by dogs, and anyone who dies in the field will be eaten by the birds of the air.”

Nehemiah 9:36-37

So here we are today as slaves in the land You gave our fathers to enjoy its fruit and goodness—here we are as slaves! Its abundant harvest goes to the kings You have set over us because of our sins. And they rule over our bodies and our livestock as they please. We are in great distress.

Psalm 38:3-5

There is no soundness in my body because of Your anger; there is no rest in my bones because of my sin. For my iniquities have overwhelmed me; they are a burden too heavy to bear. My wounds are foul and festering because of my sinful foolishness.

Isaiah 59:1-3

Surely the arm of Yahweh is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have built barriers between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He does not hear. For your hands are stained with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, and your tongue mutters injustice.

Jeremiah 5:25

Your sins have deprived you of My bounty.

Jeremiah 15:13-14

Your wealth and your treasures I will give up as plunder, without charge for all your sins within all your borders. Then I will enslave you to your enemies in a land you do not know, for My anger will kindle a fire that will burn against you.”

Jeremiah 16:10-11

When you tell these people all these things, they will ask you, ‘Why has Yahweh pronounced all this great disaster against us? What is our guilt? What is the sin that we have committed against Yahweh our God?’ Then you are to answer them: ‘It is because your fathers have forsaken Me, declares Yahweh, and followed other gods, and served and worshiped them. They abandoned Me and did not keep My instruction.

Lamentations 4:12-13

The kings of the earth did not believe, nor any people of the world, that an enemy or a foe could enter the gates of Jerusalem. But this was for the sins of her prophets and the guilt of her priests, who shed the blood of the righteous in her midst.

Ezekiel 33:10-11

Now as for you, son of man, tell the house of Israel that this is what they have said: ‘Our transgressions and our sins are heavy upon us, and we are wasting away because of them! How can we live?’ Say to them: ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord Yahweh, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked should turn from their ways and live.

Punishment for Sin

Great Earthquake as punishment for sin

As you will see in the following scriptures, in addition to the consequences of sin, we also receive direct discipline from God, especially if we are His representatives.

Exodus 32:30-35

30 The next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin. Now I will go up to Yahweh; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.”31 So Moses returned to Yahweh and said, “Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made gods of gold for themselves. 32 Yet now, if You would only forgive their sin.... But if not, please blot me out of the book that You have written.” 33 Yahweh replied to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot out of My book. 34 Now go, lead the people to the place I described. Behold, My angel shall go before you. But on the day I settle accounts, I will punish them for their sin.” 35 And Yahweh sent a plague on the people because of what they had done with the calf that Aaron had made.

Isaiah 40:1-2

“Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God. Speak comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry to her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she has received of Yahweh’s hand double for all her sins

Hosea 4:6-10

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you as My priests. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children. The more they increased, the more they sinned against me; I will change their glory into shame. They feed on the sins of My people and set their hearts on iniquity. And it shall be like people, like priest. I will punish both of them for their ways and repay them for their deeds. They will eat but not be satisfied; they will be promiscuous but not multiply. For they have stopped obeying Yahweh.

Hosea 8:12-13

Though I wrote for them the great things of My law, they regarded them as something strange. Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to Me, and though they eat the meat, Yahweh does not accept them. Now He will remember their iniquity and punish their sins: They will return to Egypt.

Micah 6:12-13

For the wealthy of the city are full of violence, and its residents speak lies; their tongues are deceitful in their mouths. Therefore I am striking you severely, to ruin you because of your sins

Atonement for Sin

Atonement for sin in the Sanctuary

When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden God had to sacrifice an animal to cover their nakedness (Genesis 3:21). In the Bible nakedness is a symbol of sin and covering is a symbol of righteousness (Revelation 3:18). Animal sacrifices have been carried out ever since, always pointing to our Messiah's sacrifice on the cross, who made a way for us to be righteous by freeing us from sin.

Leviticus 17:11

11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for your souls upon the altar; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.

Hebrews 9:22

22 According to the law, in fact, nearly everything must be purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Below are examples of sacrifices under the Old Covenant.

Exodus 29:10-14

10 You are to present the bull at the front of the Tent of Meeting, and Aaron and his sons are to lay their hands on its head. 11 And you shall slaughter the bull before Yahweh at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 12 Take some of the blood of the bull and put it on the horns of the altar with your finger; then pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 13 Take all the fat that covers the entrails and the lobe of the liver, and both kidneys with the fat on them, and burn them on the altar. 14 But burn the flesh of the bull and its hide and dung outside the camp; it is a sin offering.

Exodus 30:10

Once a year Aaron shall make atonement on the horns of the altar. Throughout your generations he shall make atonement on it annually with the blood of the sin offering of atonement.

Leviticus 4:1-3

1 Then Yahweh said to Moses, 2 “Tell the Israelites to do as follows with one who sins unintentionally against any of Yahweh’s commandments and does what is forbidden by them: 3 If the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people, he must bring to Yahweh a young bull without blemish as a sin offering for the sin he has committed.

Leviticus 4:13-14

13 Now if the whole congregation of Israel strays unintentionally and the matter escapes the notice of the assembly so that they violate any of Yahweh’s commandments and incur guilt by doing what is forbidden, 14 when they become aware of the sin they have committed, then the assembly must bring a young bull as a sin offering and present it before the Tent of Meeting.

Leviticus 4:22-23

22 When a leader sins unintentionally and does what is prohibited by any of the commandments of Yahweh his God, he incurs guilt. 23 When he becomes aware of the sin he has committed, he must bring an unblemished male goat as his offering.

Leviticus 4:27-28

27 And if one of the common people sins unintentionally and does what is prohibited by any of Yahweh’s commandments, he incurs guilt. 28 When he becomes aware of the sin he has committed, he must bring an unblemished female goat as his offering for that sin

Leviticus 4:32,35

If, however, he brings a lamb as a sin offering, he must bring an unblemished female….In this way the priest will make atonement for him for the sin he has committed, and he will be forgiven.

Repentance and Forgiveness of Sin

Woman sitting down in repentance of sin

Forgiveness of sin is conditional and comes with:

  • Prayer

  • Acknowledgement of God's name

  • Turning from sin

  • Humility

  • Seeking God's face

  • Broken spirit

  • Repentant heart

1 Kings 8:35-36

“When heaven is shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against you, if they pray toward this place and acknowledge your name and turn from their sin, when you afflict them, then may You hear from heaven and forgive the sin of Your servants, Your people Israel, so that You may teach them the good way in which they should walk.

2 Chronicles 7:14

If My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.

Psalm 32:5

I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to Yahweh,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Psalm 51:16-19

For You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; You take no pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem; Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices…

Jeremiah 36:3

Perhaps when the people of Judah hear about all the calamity I plan to bring upon them, each of them will turn from his wicked way. Then I will forgive their iniquity and their sin.”

Promise of Future Redemption

Blog_Filled-with-the-Holy-Spirit-1920-x-

In the writings of the prophets of Israel we can find the promise of a New Covenant. Under this covenant God erases past sins of those who return to Him. This covenant is deeply personal, with God's law written on hearts and minds.

  • God has blotted out sins of those who return to Him

  • God will make a new covenant with the house of Israel

  • God will put His law in His people's mind and write it on their hearts

  • God will forgive and preserve His remnant

  • God will bring in everlasting righteousness

  • God will open a fountain to cleanse His people from their sin

Isaiah 44:22

I have blotted out, like a thick cloud, your transgressions, And like a cloud, your sins. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you.”

Jeremiah 31:33:34

“But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares Yahweh. I will put My law in their minds and inscribe it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people. No longer will each man teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know Yahweh,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares Yahweh. For I will forgive their iniquities and will remember their sins no more.”

Jeremiah 50:20

In those days and at that time, declares Yahweh, a search will be made for Israel’s guilt, but there will be none, and for Judah’s sins, but they will not be found; for I will forgive the remnant I preserve.

Daniel 9:24

“Seventy weeks are determined For your people and for your holy city, To finish the transgression, To make an end of sins, To make reconciliation for iniquity, To bring in everlasting righteousness, To seal up vision and prophecy, And to anoint the Most Holy.

Zechariah 13:1

On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the people of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity.

"Sin" in the New Testament

Forgiveness of sin under the New Covenant

Forgiveness of sin under the New Covenant.

Forgiveness of sins is central to the New Covenant with Jesus Christ as the promised Savior who would deliver His people from their sin. His sacrificial death was the ultimate atonement for sin. Repentance and the forgiveness of sins are proclaimed in Jesus' name to all nations offering forgiveness and reconciliation for all who believe.

  • Jesus is promised to save His people from their sin

  • Jesus has authority on earth to forgive sins

  • Jesus' blood has been poured out for forgiveness of sins

  • Repentance and forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed in Jesus' name to all nations

  • Jesus is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world

  • God presented Jesus as the atoning sacrifice through faith in His blood

Matthew 1:21

And she will bring forth a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins

Matthew 9:2

Just then some men brought to Him a paralytic lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven.”

Matthew 9:6, Mark 2:5, Luke 5:20

But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins..." Then He says to the paralytic, "Having arisen, take up your mat and go to your house."

Matthew 26:28

For this is My blood of the covenant, being poured out for many, for forgiveness of sins

Luke 1:76-77

And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for Him, to give to His people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins

Luke 24:46-47

“This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins to be proclaimed in His name to all nations, having begun from Jerusalem.

John 1:29

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

John 20:22-23

When He had said this, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.”

Acts 10:43

To Him all the prophets bear witness that everyone believing in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name."

Acts 13:38-39

Therefore let it be known to you, brothers, that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through Him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses.

Romans 3:25

God presented Him as the atoning sacrifice through faith in His blood, in order to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance He had passed over the sins committed beforehand.

Repentance and Baptism

Jesus is babtised in Jordan

Under the Old covenant the High priest had to wash himself before bringing a sin offering for his people, which is a type and shadow of Christ becoming the new High priest and being baptised in the Jordan river:

Leviticus 16:23-24

23 Then Aaron is to enter the Tent of Meeting, take off the linen garments he put on before entering the Most Holy Place, and leave them there. 24 He is to bathe himself with water in a holy place and put on his own clothes. Then he must go out and sacrifice his burnt offering and the people’s burnt offering to make atonement for himself and for the people.

Under the New Covenant God's people, being the kingdom of priests (Revelation 1:6) are called to follow the same pattern.

Matthew 3:6

People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region around the Jordan and confessing their sins, were being baptized by him in the Jordan River.

Mark 1:4-5

John came baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins. People went out to him from all of Jerusalem and the countryside of Judea. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

Acts 2:38

And Peter says to them, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 22:16

And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized, and wash your sins away, calling on His name.’

Freedom from Sin in Jesus

Sin enslaves us, but Jesus offers true freedom from it. Those freed from sin become servants of God, walking in the light and fellowship with God and one another. If we confess our sins, God forgives and cleans us from it. If we remain In Christ, sin has no power over us.

  • Everyone who sins is a slave to sin

  • If the Son sets you free from sin you are truly free

  • The ones who have been set free from sin have become slaves to (workers of) God

  • If we walk in the light we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin

  • If we confess our sins God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness

  • In Christ there is no sin

  • No one who remains in Christ keeps on sinning

John 8:34-36

Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Romans 6:22-23

But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the fruit you reap leads to holiness, and the outcome is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 John 1:7-10

7 If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar, and His word is not in us.

1 John 3:4-6

4 Everyone who practices sin practices lawlessness as well. Indeed, sin is lawlessness. 5 But you know that Christ appeared to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin6 No one who remains in Him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has seen Him or known Him.

Confronting Sin

spiritual-warefare_edited.jpg

The Bible gives us clear instructions on how to deal with sin committed agains us. Address sin privately with the offender. If resolution isn't achieved, involve a small group. If still unresolved, bring the matter to the wider community. Ultimately, if the individual remains unrepentant, treat them as an outsider.

  • If your brother sins against you confront him privately

  • If he doesn't listen take one or two others along

  • If he doesn't listen to them tell it to the church

  • If he doesn't listen to the church treat him as a pagan (not a brother)

Matthew 18:15-17

15 If your brother sins against you, go and confront him privately. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. 16 But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, regard him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

Luke 17:3-4

Watch yourselves. If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. Even if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times returns to say, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”

1 Timothy 5:20

But those sinning, rebuke before all, so that the rest might have fear as well.

Titus 3:10-11

Reject a divisive man after a first and second admonition, knowing that such a man is corrupt and sinful; he is self-condemned.

James 5:19-20

My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, consider this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover over a multitude of sins

Sin and the Law

Understanding "Sin and the Law" essentially involves to two key points: those who sin without knowing the Law will still face consequences, those who sin while knowing the Law will be judged by it. The Law helps us recognize what sin is. God, through Jesus, condemned sin so that those who follow the Spirit fulfil the law's righteous standard. In essence, sin is breaking the law.

  • The ones who have sinned without the Law will perish without the Law

  • The ones who have sinned in the Law will be judged by the Law

  • The law brings awareness of sin

  • God condemned sin in the flesh (of Jesus) so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in those who walk according to the Spirit

  • Sin is transgression of the law

Romans 2:12

For as many as have sinned without the Law also will perish without the Law; and as many as have sinned in the Law will be judged by the Law.

Romans 3:20

No one will be justified in His sight by works of the law. For the law merely brings awareness of sin

Romans 7:9-11

Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. So I discovered that the very commandment that was meant to bring life actually brought death. For sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through the commandment put me to death.

Romans 8:3-4

For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

1 John 3:4

Everyone who practices sin practices lawlessness as well. Indeed, sin is lawlessness.

The Nature of Sin

The concept of sin, as depicted in the passages below, highlights its diverse aspects. These include the contrast between ignorance and accountability, the recognition of varying degrees of wrongdoing, the significance of faith in moral decision-making, the visibility of some sins versus others, the progression from internal desires to outward actions, and the necessity to forsake sin and adhere to God's will. Together, these insights offer a comprehensive understanding of the nature and implications of sin in human existence.

John 9:4

“If you were blind,” Jesus replied, “you would not be guilty of sin. But since you claim you can see, your guilt remains.”

John 15:22

If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin

John 19:11

Jesus answered him, "You would have no authority over Me, if it were not given to you from above. Because of this, the one having delivered Me up to you has greater sin."

Romans 14:23

Everything that is not from faith is sin

1 Timothy 5:24

The sins of some men are obvious, going ahead of them to judgment; but the sins of others do not surface until later.

James 1:13-15

When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires he is lured away and enticed. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

James 4:13-17

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit.” 14 You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes, 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your proud intentions. All such boasting is evil. 17 Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do, yet fails to do it, is guilty of sin.

1 Peter 4:1-2

Therefore, since Christ suffered in His body, arm yourselves with the same resolve, because anyone who has suffered in his body is done with sin. Consequently, he does not live out his remaining time on earth for human passions, but for the will of God.

Can we continue to sin after being saved?

sin scale

As you will see in the scriptures below we are most certainly called not to sin. In fact in all of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation you will not find a verse where God approves of any sin. What it means in reality is that our hearts should be set on not sinning, it should be our goal. If we know that something is sinful, we shouldn't do it, as we are given self-control by the Holy Spirit to carry it out. Of course if we fail out of ignorance or due to old habits, we repent, God forgives and hopefully we learn our lesson.

Romans 6:1-2

What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase? Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer?

Romans 6:6

We know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be rendered powerless, that we should no longer be slaves to sin

Romans 6:11-12

So you too must count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires.

Romans 6:15-16

What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace? Certainly not! Do you not know that when you offer yourselves as obedient slaves, you are slaves to the one you obey, whether you are slaves to sin leading to death, or to obedience leading to righteousness?

1 John 3:8-9

8 The one who practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the very start. This is why the Son of God was revealed, to destroy the works of the devil. 9 Anyone born of God refuses to practice sin, because God’s seed abides in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.

Can all sin be forgiven?

The "unforgivable sin" or "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" is warned against in the New Testament, particularly in Jesus' teachings. Blasphemy (βλασφημία, blasphēmia) signifies slander or irreverence against the Holy Spirit. Hebrews 10:26-29 underscores the severity of sin, especially willful rejection of God's grace. 1 John 5:16-17 distinguishes sins leading to death from those not, suggesting prayer for the latter but not the former. These passages emphasize the gravity of persistently rejecting God's offer of salvation, highlighting the importance of repentance and God's mercy.

Below are the sins that are not forgiven according to scripture:

  • Speaking against the Holy Spirit

  • Deliberate or unrepentant life of sin

Matthew 12:31-32  (Mark 3:28–30, Luke 12:10)

Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the one to come.

Hebrews 10:26-29

26 If we deliberately go on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no further sacrifice for sins remains, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume all adversaries. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think one deserves to be punished who has trampled on the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

1 John 5:16-17

16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he should ask God, who will give life to those who commit this kind of sin. There is a sin that leads to death; I am not saying he should ask regarding that sin17 All unrighteousness is sin, yet there is sin that does not lead to death.
