Seven Seals of Revelation
The Book of Revelation, the final book of the New Testament, is often regarded as one of the most enigmatic and symbolic texts in the Bible, and maybe the hardest one to understand. Central to its narrative are the Seven Seals, a sequence of seals that, when broken, unleash a series of events leading to the culmination of human history. These seals have fascinated theologians, scholars, and believers for centuries, offering a rich mosaic of symbolism and interpretation. In this article, we embark on a journey to unravel the mysteries behind the Seven Seals of Revelation.
The Context of Revelation
Before exploring the significance of the Seven Seals, it's essential to understand the broader context of the Book of Revelation. Written by the Apostle John during his exile on the island of Patmos in the late first century, Revelation is a vision of the end times and the ultimate triumph of good over evil. Its apocalyptic imagery and vivid symbolism convey messages of judgment, redemption, and hope to the early Christian communities facing persecution under the Roman Empire.
Prophetic Timeline of the Seven Seals
To help us understand the timing of the seven seals we can look at prophetic meaning of God's feasts. The spring feasts of Passover, Unleavened Bread, Firstfruits, and Weeks are connected to Christ's first coming, signifying His death, resurrection, and establishment of His church, the fall set of feasts including Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and Tabernacles point to His second coming, the judgment of humanity, and finally, God's eternal dwelling with men.
The time of the seven seals falls in between the spring and the fall sets of feasts, just before the return of Jesus or the Day of the Lord. If we take a look at the prophecies of Daniel below, we can see very specific timeline. According to this timeline, the Antichrist will make a 7 year covenant with many (nations). In the middle of these 7 years he will break this covenant and set up the abomination of desolation. This will mark the beginning of the 3,5 years (1260 days) of the Great Tribulation, during which the Antichrist will have dominion over the whole world and introduce the Mark of the Beast. After the time of Great Tribulation Daniel gives us a period of 30 days and 45 days, which most likely correspond to the last 5 plagues and the Battle of Armageddon. The time period of the seven seals will last for 2595 days in total culminating in the return of Jesus.
27 And he will confirm a covenant with many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of the temple will come the abomination that causes desolation, until the decreed destruction is poured out upon him.
10 Many will be purified, made spotless, and refined, but the wicked will continue to act wickedly. None of the wicked will understand, but the wise will understand. 11 And from the time the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation set up, there will be 1,290 days. 12 Blessed is he who waits and reaches the end of the 1,335 days.

What are the Seven Seals?
The seven seals are described in Revelation 6. Each opened seal releases a sequence of events you can see in the summary below. The seventh seal contains seven trumpets and bowls described in Revelation 8-18. The seventh trumpet brings in the Day of the Lord.

The 1st Seal: Rider on a white horse has a bow, is given a crown and goes out to conquer (false messiahs and prophets)

The 2nd Seal: Rider on a red horse takes peace from the earth, is given a large sword (war)

The 3d Seal: Rider on a black horse has scales, is told to not hurt the oil and the wine (famine)

The 4th Seal: Rider on a pale green horse named Death, hell was following him, 1/4 of people are killed by the sword, famine, plague and wild animals (death)

The 5th Seal: Martyrs’ souls are under the altar, they are given white robes and told to wait a little longer until the rest is martyred (persecution of the saints)

The 6th Seal: Earthquake, sun turned black, blood moon, stars fell, sky split and rolled up, every island and mountain moved, people hid in caves

The 7th Seal: silence in heaven for 1/2 hour, 7 trumpets are given to 7 angels, another angel is given golden incense burner with prayers of the saints, filled it with fire from the altar, hurled it to earth, thunder, lightening and earthquake on earth
The First Five Seals
There are three chapters in the New Testament describing the same sequence of events: Revelation 6 , Matthew 24 and Mark 13. They cover a period of time from the time the Antichrist makes a covenant with the nations until the return of Christ. If we compare these chapters side by side, we can see the similarities in the events and their order. The chapters in Matthew and Mark are almost identical, so we can merge them together. For now we'll focus on the first five seals out of the seven.

Notice the difference between the rider on the white horse in Revelation 6:1-2, who has a bow, and Jesus returning on the white horse in Revelation 19:15, who has a sword. We also know from Ephesians 6:16 that arrows come from the evil side.
The Sixth Seal
The Sixth seal marks a small window between the first 5 seals and the wrath of God coming with the seventh seal. In the timeline of Matthew 24 and Mark 13 it is described as "darkness".

The 144,000
After the opening of the sixth seal, we see a depiction of the 144,000. By examining both Revelation 7 and Revelation 14, we can gather specific details about them, they are:

sealed on their foreheads with the Lamb's and the Father's name

from 12 tribes of Israel

12,000 from each tribe of: Judah, Reuben, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Manasseh, Simeon, Levi, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph and Benjamin

redeemed from the Earth
-
virgins who follow the Lamb
-
blameless
In Revelation 7 the 144,000 are already in Heaven, likewise in Revelation 14 they are with Jesus on Mount Zion, but they are still before God's throne. So the two places in scripture suggest that the 144,000 are in Heaven.
James referred to the firstborn believers in Christ as 'a kind of firstfruits,' while Paul referred to the saints who would be resurrected at Christ's second coming as the 'firstfruits.' This suggests that the 144,000 could potentially be the initial 144,000 Jewish believers from the first century.
However, the reason why they are sealed before the outpouring of God's wrath, when the seventh seal is opened, remains unclear, leaving it as a mystery for the time being.
144,000 Sealed:
Four angels hold back the wind until 144,000 are sealed on their foreheads, from 12 tribes of Israel. Praise from the Great Multitude of martyrs before God’s throne.
The Lamb and the 144,000:
The lamb stands on Mount Zion with 144,000 who have His and His Father’s name on their foreheads, redeemed from the earth, virgins who follow the lamb, firstfruits, blameless; they sang a new song before the throne, four living creatures and elders.
A kind of firstfruits:
He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.
Resurrected Christ, the firstfruits:
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.
The Seventh Seal
Here's what is happening in Heaven around the time of the last 7 plagues released by the 7th seal, giving us a hint that 7 trumpets and 7 bowls are describing the same events, specifically the fact that the plagues are finished after the 7th trumpet:

the 7th seal includes the fall of Babylon and the last plagues

the last plagues are the fall of Babylon

7 angels are given 7 trumpets and 7 bowls

after the 7th trumpet the kingdom of the world becomes the kingdom of God

no one could enter the temple in Heaven until the plagues were finished

after the 7th trumpet the temple in Heaven is opened
The 7th Seal:
Silence in heaven for 1/2 hour, 7 trumpets are given to 7 angels, another angel is given a golden incense burner with prayers of the saints, filled it with fire from the altar, hurled it to earth causing thunder, lightening and earthquake.
7th Trumpet:
Kingdom of the world has become the Kingdom of God, time to: judge the dead, reward the saints, destroy the destroyers of the Earth; the Temple in Heaven is opened, the ark appeared, lightening, thunder, earthquake and severe hail on earth.
The Harvest of the Earth:
The Son of Man on a white cloud with a golden crown and a sharp sickle harvested the earth. The angel who had authority over fire came from the altar in heaven and said to the angel with a sharp sickle : “use your sickle and gather the grapes from vineyard of the earth”. The angel gathered the grapes and threw them into the winepress of God’s wrath. The press was trampled outside the city.
The Song of Moses and the Lamb:
7 angels in heaven with 7 last plagues completing God’s wrath. Those who had won the victory over the beast were standing on the sea of glass with harps from God, singing the song of Moses and of the Lamb.
Preparation for Judgment, heavenly temple/ tabernacle of testimony is opened, out came 7 angels with 7 plagues. One of the 4 living creatures gave them 7 golden bowls filled with God’s wrath, the Temple was filled with smoke of God’s glory and no one could enter until the plagues were finished.
Babylon the Great
Right after the 144,000 scene we are shown the fall of Babylon, taking place during the seventh seal, spread throughout several chapters of the book of Revelation. Let's pause and see what this Babylon is:

Jerusalem is "the great city" (Revelation 11)

Jerusalem is figuratively called "Sodom and Egypt" (Revelation 11)
-
Babylon the Great sits on the beast with 7 heads and 10 horns and is drunk with the blood of the saints (Revelation 17)

In Babylon the Great was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who had been slain on earth (Revelation 18)
-
On Jerusalem will come all the righteous blood shed on earth (Matthew 23)
There is only one city which can be responsible for shedding all the righteous blood including the blood of Jesus and it is Jerusalem...
When the two witnesses have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will wage war with them, and will overpower and kill them. Their bodies will lie in the street of the great city—called Sodom and Egypt—where their Lord was crucified.
The Three Angels and Babylon’s Fall:
1st angel flying high with eternal gospel saying loudly: “Fear God, give him glory, judgement has come”. 2nd angel: “ Babylon the great has fallen”. 3d angel: Whoever worships the beast and his image and receives the mark will be tormented with fire and sulphur forever. Call for endurance of the saints who keep God’s commands and faith in Jesus”. “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on”.
Poured out into the air-it’s done, lightening/thunder/greatest earthquake, great city split into 3 parts-all cities fell, Babylon got the cup of God’s anger, all islands fled, mountains disappeared, 100 pound hailstones.
The Woman on the Beast:
Notorious prostitute seated on many waters-nations, kings committed sexual immorality with her, people are drunk with the wine of her immorality, she is seated on a scarlet beast covered with blasphemous names with 7 heads and 10 horns, woman is dressed in purple and scarlet with gold jewels and pearls, has golden cup full of everything detestable, on her forehead: “Babylon the Great, the Mother of Prostitutes and of the Detestable Things of the Earth”, she is drunk with blood of the saints.
The Mystery Explained:
The beast was, and is not, and is yet to come from the abyss and go into destruction, people will be astonished by it, 7 heads are 7 mountains-7 kings she sits on, 5 are fallen, 1 is and 1 is to come for a short time, the beast is the 8th king and belongs to the 7, 10 horns are 10 kings without a kingdom yet, they will receive authority with the beast for 1 hour, the purpose of 10 kings is to give power and authority to the beast, they will war with the lamb and loose. 10 horns and the beast will hate the woman, they will desolate her, eat her flesh and burn her. The woman is the great city that has power over the kings of the earth.
Babylon Is Fallen:
An angel with great authority called out: Babylon the Great has fallen! She is the home for demons. All nations drank the wine of her sexual immorality. The kings took part in it, merchants got wealthy from it. “Come out of her my people to not take part in her sins or share her plagues.” Her plagues will come in one day: death, grief, famine and fire.
Lament over Babylon:
Kings and merchants will mourn over her as she was destroyed in one hour. Rejoice heaven, saints, apostles and prophets!
The Doom of Babylon:
Because all nations were deceived by her sorcery and in her was found the blood of all slaughtered on the earth.
Lament over Jerusalem:
34 Because of this, I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and others you will flog in your synagogues and persecute in town after town. 35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar... 37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those sent to her, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling!
The Last Seven Plagues
While the plagues of the seventh seal in Revelation may not be identical, they exhibit many parallels and no contradictions. Revelation 10 states that "after the 7th trumpet, the prophesied mystery will be finished," despite being halfway through the book. Likewise, after the 7th bowl is poured out, a voice declares, "It is done." So we can conclude that the trumpets and bowls describe the same events.
The Seven Trumpets:
-
1st Trumpet: hail and fire mixed with blood, 1/3 earth burned.
-
2nd Trumpet: fiery mountain hurled into the sea, 1/3 sea became blood, 1/3 creatures died, 1/3 ships destroyed.
-
3d Trumpet: great Wormwood star fell on 1/3 rivers and springs, people died from bitter waters.
-
4th Trumpet: 1/3 of sun, moon and stars got dark, 1/3 day and 1/3 night were dark.

5th Trumpet: ”star” fell from heaven, key to shaft of abyss was given to him, he opened the shaft, smoke came out, sun was darkened, locusts came out looking like armed horses with “golden crowns”, “human faces”, “women’s hair”, “lions teeth”, iron breastplates, noisy wings, “scorpion tails”, their king was Abandon/Apollyon, were told not to harm plants only people for 5 months, people wished to die but could not.

6th Trumpet: 4 angels are released to kill 1/3 people, 200 million mounted troops on horses, red, blue and yellow breastplates, “lion heads”, fire, smoke and sulphur comes from their mouths, stinging snake tails, remaining people did not repent.
Angel raised his right hand to heaven and swore by Creator that when 7th angel blows the trumpet prophesied mystery will be finished.

7th Trumpet: kingdom of the world became kingdom of God, time to: judge the dead, reward the saints, destroy destroyers of the Earth; temple in Heaven is opened, ark appeared, lightening, thunder, earthquake, severe hail.
The Seven Bowls of Wrath:

1st bowl-earth-severely painful sores.

2nd bowl-sea-turned into dead blood, all life in the sea died.
-
3d bowl-rivers and springs-became blood (for the blood of prophets and saints).

4th bowl-sun-burnt people with fire, they blasphemed God and did not repent.
-
5th bowl-beast’s throne-darkness-people blasphemed God and did not repent.
-
6th bowl-river Euphrates-water dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the east, 3 unclean frog spirits coming from dragon’s, beast’s and false prophet’s mouths performing signs to gather all kings for the battle of Armageddon.

7th bowl-air-it is done: lightening, thunder, greatest earthquake, great city split into 3 parts-all cities fell, Babylon got the cup of God’s anger, all islands fled, mountains disappeared, 100 pound hailstones.
If we merge together the events of trumpets and bowls, this is the sequence we get:

1st Plague-hail and fire mixed with blood, burning 1/3 of the earth and causing severely painful sores
-
2nd Plague-fiery mountain hurled into the sea, turning 1/3 of sea water into blood, killing all life in it and destroying ships
-
3d Plague-great Wormwood star fell on 1/3 of rivers and springs, turning them into blood, people died of bitter waters
-
4th Plague-1/3 of sun, moon, stars, day and night got dark, the sun burnt people with fire
-
5th Plague-Abyss opened, smoke darkened the sun, Abyss army tormented people for 5 months
-
6th Plague-preparation for the battle of Armageddon, 4 angels are released to kill 1/3 of people
-
7th Plague-Jerusalem is split into 3 parts by an earthquake, all cities fell, all islands fled, mountains disappeared, 100 pound hailstones fell
The Sixth Plague
Below are the main events that happen during the 6th plague which brings in the battle of Armageddon, we are given the most details about this time, this is where the 3.5 years of Great Tribulation fit in:

the 4th and last Kingdom on earth will consist of Rome and the rest of the world which it will devour (Daniel 2)

10 horns come out of the 4th Kingdom (Daniel 7)
-
Beast with 7 heads and 10 horns is the Red Dragon-Serpent-Devil-Satan (Revelation 12)
-
The First Beast, like leopard, with bear’s feet and lion’s mouth, with 10 horns comes out of the sea (Revelation 13)
-
Dragon gives the First Beast authority for 3.5 years to war with and conquer the saints (Revelation 13)
-
Out of 10 horns comes out 1 small horn (Antichrist) who will overpower the saints for 3.5 years (Daniel 7)

Woman-Israel will flee into the wilderness and will be nourished for 3.5 years (Revelation 12)

Dragon goes to war with Woman-Israel's offspring who follow Jesus (Revelation 12)

During the 3.5 years gentiles will trample the holy city and the 2 witnesses will prophecy, do miracles, will be killed by the beast and will resurrect (Revelation 11)

First Beast is wounded by the sword and his fatal wound is healed (Revelation 13)

Second Beast from the earth has 2 horns like a lamb, speaks as a dragon, has all authority like the First beast (Revelation 13)

He compels the earth to worship the First beast, performs great signs, makes fire come down from heaven, deceives the people, tells them to make an image of the First beast, gives breath to the image, so it can speak and kill the ones who will not worship it, makes everyone receive the mark of the name of the beast or/and the number of its name/the number of a man 666 on the right hand or/and forehead to be able to buy or sell (Revelation 13)

10 horns are 10 kings without a kingdom yet, they will receive authority with the beast-8th king for 1 hour (Revelation 17)

The purpose of 10 kings is to give power and authority to the beast, they will war with the lamb (Jesus) and loose (Revelation 17)

Gog will be turned around and brought out with his armies

Persia, Cush, Put, Gomer, Beit-Togarma will join Gog

This will happen in latter years after Israel is brought back from the nations and recovered from war

There will be a great earthquake in the land of Israel

Every man’s sword will be against his brother

Flood, hailstones, fire, and sulfur will be poured out on the armies

God will reveal Himself in the sight of many nations

God is against Gog

God will turn Gog around, bring him from far north against Israel

God will strike the bow and arrows from his hands

Gog and his armies will fall in the open field

God will send fire on Gog and coastlands

Israelis will burn weapons instead of fuel for 7 years

Gog will be buried in the Valley of Travelers east of the sea, it will be called the Valley of Hamon-Gog and the city will be called Hamona

Israel will be burying Gog’s armies for 7 months
-
Call to every kind of bird and beast of the field to come to the feast to eat flesh and drink blood of mighty men and warriors
-
All Israel will be regathered and God will poor out His Spirit on them
The Witnesses Killed and Raised:
John is given a rod to measure the temple and altar, count worshippers, exclude outside court given to gentiles who will trample the holy city for 42 months, 2 witnesses will have authority to prophesy for 1260 days, whoever wants to harm them is killed by fire out of their mouths, they have power to stop rain, turn water into blood, strike earth with any plague at any time. When they finish testimony the beast will kill them, their bodies will lie in streets of Jerusalem for 3.5 days, people will celebrate, 2 witnesses resurrect, go up to heaven in a cloud, violent earthquake, 1/10th of city fell, 7000 killed, survivors gave God glory.
The Woman and the Dragon Signs in Heaven:
woman clothed in sun, with moon under her feet, crowned with 12 stars, pregnant, in labour; red dragon has 7 heads, 10 horns and 7 crowns; his tail swept 1/3 stars from heaven to earth, ready to devour the newborn. Woman gave birth to a son who is to rule all nations with iron rod, he was caught up to God’s throne. Woman fled into wilderness to place prepared by God to be nourished for 1260 days. The War in Heaven: Michael with angels fought the dragon and his angels. Dragon/serpent/devil/satan lost and thrown out of heaven to earth with his angels. Salvation, power, kingdom and authority of Christ have come. The accuser is conquered by the blood of the lamb and by martyrs’ testimonies. Rejoice heavens, woe to Earth. The Woman is persecuted by the dragon, she is given wings to fly to her place in the wilderness to be nourished for 3,5 times/years.The Dragon went to war with the rest of her offspring who keep commands of God and hold firmly to testimony of Jesus.
The Beast from the Sea:
Dragon stands on the sand of the sea, the beast comes out of the sea with 10 horns, 10 crowns, blasphemous names on its heads, he is like a leopard with bear’s feet and lion’s mouth. Dragon gave power, throne and authority to the beast for 42 months. One of its heads looked fatally wounded, but was healed. All the earth was amazed, followed and worshipped the beast and the dragon. The beast is given a mouth to blaspheme, wage war and conquer the saints.
The Beast from the Earth:
Had 2 horns like a lamb, spoke as a dragon, had all authority like the 1st beast, compelled the earth to worship the 1st beast who’s fatal wound was healed, it performed great signs, made fire come down from heaven, deceived the people, told them to make an image of the beast wounded by the sword, it gave breath to the image, so it can speak and kill the ones who will not worship it.
The Mark of the Beast:
It made everyone receive the mark of the name of the beast or/and the number of its name/the number of a man 666 on the right hand or/and forehead to be able to buy or sell.
The Woman on the Beast:
Notorious prostitute is seated on many waters/nations, kings committed sexual immorality with her, people are drunk with the wine of her immorality, she is seated on a scarlet beast covered with blasphemous names with 7 heads and 10 horns, woman is dressed in purple and scarlet with gold jewels and pearls, has golden cup full of everything detestable, on her forehead: “Babylon the Great, the Mother of Prostitutes and of the Detestable Things of the Earth”, she is drunk with blood of saints.
The Mystery Explained:
The beast was, and is not, and is yet to come from abyss and go to destruction, people will be astonished by it, 7 heads are 7 mountains-7 kings the woman sits on, 5 are fallen, 1 is and 1 is to come for a short time, the beast is the 8th king and belongs to the 7, 10 horns are 10 kings without a kingdom yet, they will receive authority with the beast for 1 hour, the purpose of 10 kings is to give power and authority to the beast, they will war with the lamb and loose. 10 horns and the beast will hate the woman, they will desolate her, eat her flesh and burn her. The woman is the great city that has power over the kings of the earth.
