Psalm 91

Comment

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

The hidden room reminds me of Jesus, who taught his desciples how to pray with these words from Matthew 6:6: ...But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. In prayer we find our protection and security.

I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

This is about telling God that we trust him. Whoever puts his trust completely in the Lord, will never be disappointed. God responds to our faith. Just remember the woman in Matthew 9:20-22

For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence.

This is the beginning of God's promises for whoever trusts in him. The fowler's snare symbolises the enemy's tricky snares and attacks. The deadly pestilence symbolises all kinds of diseases.

He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.

The picture of the hen, who protects her chicks with her wings, shows God's care for us. Look up Psalm 57:2

You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

God's faithfulness stands firm, despite the sicknesses that many people fear so much. Whatever diseases may be around us, we have no reason to be afraid, because we have already put our trust in God.

A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked.

Situations like this are difficult for us to imagine. Veterans or people involved in a war can relate to this scenario. But even in a situation like this, God's faithfulness remains in every imaginable situation. His possibilities are limitless when it comes to protecting those who trust in him even in the most hopeless situations.

Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place— the Most High, who is my refuge

This verse is also about our commitment to the Lord: By proclaiming my trust in the Lord loudly and clearly, I therefore make the Most High and allmighty God my refuge and take cover in his protection.

no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent.

In 2. Corinthians 5:1, Paul talks about his own body as the "earthly tent" and "earthly home". The word tent always means something temporary, which only gives us an unsafe dwelling place for a certain amount of time. For this time we need God's protection. This protection is promised in this verse to whoever proclaims his trust in the Lord.

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.

God answers our prayers by sending out angels with different orders. The angels carry out God's commands precisely and immediatly. Satan, who once was an angel as well, knows about this and missused this scripture. He tried to misslead Jesus whith it and to make Jesus put God to the test, by putting himself into a lifethreatening situation. (Matthew 4:5-7)

You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.

Our feet, protected by angels are fit to put Jesus Chist's victory on the cross into action by having the vitory over the power of the enemy and his demonic powers. (Luke 10:19)

“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

Here, God gives us a sneakpeak into his thoughts about the person, who puts his trust in him. He promises this person

  • salvation

  • Protection

  • giving ear to his pleads

  • help in times of need

  • redemption

  • honor

  • satisfaction with a long life

  • witnessing God's salvation I am making this into my prayer and give thanks to God for speaking like this about me.
