Commands of Christ

Jesus teaching His disciples

If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

John 14:15

We know that God’s greatest commands is to love Him, and to love Him is to keep his commands, to keep His commands we have to know what they are, so let’s make sure that we fully know them.

If we take a careful look at how Jesus taught, we’ll notice that just like God’s law which consisted of different kinds of instructions, His teaching consisted of commands, precepts, lessons and parables. We’ll start with His commands as they are the most direct and probably the most important. You will also notice from cross-references that most of Jesus’ commands are not new but come directly from the Old Testament scriptures.

Relationship with God

  • Repent

Matthew 4:17  (Hosea 14:2,  Joel 2:13)

17…“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

  • Be proactive with God

Matthew 7:7-8,  Luke 11:5–13  (Psalm 37:4,  Jeremiah 29:13)

7  Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. 8  For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

  • If you are weary come to Jesus

Matthew 11:28-30  (Isaiah 28:12Jeremiah 6:16,  Jeremiah 31:25,  Micah 6:8)

28  Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Relationship with Others

  • Reconcile with your brother before you come to God

Matthew 5:21-24,  Luke 12:57–59  (Exodus 20:13,  Deuteronomy 16:18,  Proverbs 25:9)

21  You have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do not murder’ and ‘Anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22  But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ will be subject to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be subject to the fire of hell. 23  So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24  leave your gift there before the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.

  • Do not resist an evil person

Matthew 5:38-39,  Luke 6:29  (Deuteronomy 19:21,  Proverbs 20:22,  Proverbs 24:29)

38  You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.’ 39  But I tell you not to resist an evil person. If someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also;

  • Do more than is asked of you

Matthew 5:40-42,  Luke 6:29,  Luke 6:30  (Deuteronomy 15:7,  Proverbs 21:26,  Proverbs 25:21)

40 …if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well; 41  and if someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42  Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

  • Love your enemies

Matthew 5:43-45,  Luke 6:27,  Luke 6:28,  Luke 6:35  (Leviticus 19:18,  Proverbs 19:11)

43  You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor’ and ‘Hate your enemy.’ 44  But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45  that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

  • Do not give dogs what is holy

Matthew 7:6  (Proverbs 9:8,  Proverbs 23:9,  Proverbs 26:4)

6  Do not give dogs what is holy; do not throw your pearls before swine. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.

  • In everything do to others as you would have them do to you

Matthew 7:12  (Leviticus 19:18,  Isaiah 1:17,18)

12  In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you. For this is the essence of the Law and the Prophets.

  • If your brother sins against you rebuke him, if he repents, forgive him

Luke 17:3-4,  Matthew 18:15  (Leviticus 19:17,  Deuteronomy 19:15–21)

3  Watch yourselves. If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. 4  Even if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times returns to say, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”

  • Be merciful

Luke 6:36  (Exodus 34:6)

36  Be merciful (compassionate), just as your Father is merciful.

  • Judge justly

John 7:24  (Leviticus 19:15,  Deuteronomy 1:16,  Isaiah 11:3,  Zechariah 7:9)

24  Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly.”

  • Lay down your life for your friends

John 15:12-13,  John 13:34

12  This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13  Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

Personal Conduct

  • Let your light shine-do good deeds

Matthew 5:14-16  (Proverbs 4:18)

14  You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16  In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

  • Do not swear

Matthew 5:33-37  (Leviticus 19:12,  Numbers 30:2,  Deuteronomy 23:23)

33  Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill your vows to the Lord.’ 34  But I tell you not to swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35  or by the earth, for it is His footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36  Nor should you swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. 37  Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ Anything more comes from the evil one.

  • Be perfect

Matthew 5:48  (Genesis 17:1,  Leviticus 19:2,  Deuteronomy 18:13)

48  Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  • Do not show off your righteousness

Matthew 6:1-4  (Proverbs 20:6,  Jeremiah 17:10)

1  “Be careful not to perform your righteous acts before men to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2  So when you give to the needy, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward. 3  But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4  so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

  • Pray in private

Matthew 6:5-6  (Job 27:8-10,  Proverbs 16:5)

5  And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward. 6  But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

  • Do not make your fasting obvious to men

Matthew 6:16-18  (Isaiah 58:3,  Zechariah 7:5)

16  When you fast, do not be somber like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward. 17  But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18  so that your fasting will not be obvious to men, but only to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

  • Do not store up your treasure on earth but in Heaven

Matthew 6:19-21  (Proverbs 23:4,  Psalm 39:6)

19  Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  • Do not worry about tomorrow

Matthew 6:31-34,  Matthew 6:25  (Psalm 111:5,  Proverbs 10:3)

31  Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32  For the Gentiles strive after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33  But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. 34  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.

  • Do not judge

Matthew 7:1-2,  Luke 6:37,  Mark 4:24  (Isaiah 33:1)

1  “Do not judge, or you will be judged. 2  For with the same judgment you pronounce, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

  • Do not be a hypocrite

Matthew 7:3-5,  Luke 6:41  (Proverbs 11:9)

3  Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but fail to notice the beam in your own eye? 4  How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while there is still a beam in your own eye? 5  You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

  • Do not follow the crowd

Matthew 7:13-14,  Luke 13:22–30  (Exodus 23:2,  Isaiah 35:8)

13  Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14  But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it.

  • Beware of and discern false prophets

Matthew 7:15-20,  Luke 6:43–45  (Proverbs 20:11,  Jeremiah 23:16)

15  Beware of false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16  By their fruit you will recognize them. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17  Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18  A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19  Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20  So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.

  • Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s

Matthew 22:21

21…“Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

  • Guard yourself against every form of greed

Luke 12:15  (Psalm 62:10,  Psalm 119:36)

15 … “Watch out! Guard yourselves against every form of greed, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

  • Work for food that endures to eternal life

John 6:27  (Proverbs 9:5,  Isaiah 55:2)

27  Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.”

The Great Commission

  • Make Disciples

Matthew 28:16-20Mark 16:14–18

16  Meanwhile, the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain Jesus had designated. 17  When they saw Him, they worshiped Him, but some doubted. 18  Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. 19  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit20  and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
